Boeiende lezing over het historische Brugge bijna 500 jaar geleden op zondag 19 maart

‘We tekenen 460 jaar na datum. In 1562 werkte Marcus Gerards een plan van Brugge uit, dat de stad letterlijk terug op de kaart zou moeten zetten. De haven van Brugge leed onder zware concurrentie en de stad had een middel nodig om haar makkelijke bereikbaarheid en ideale infrastructuur in de verf te zetten. Daar ontstond het plattegrond, dat inmiddels door vele Bruggelingen geliefd is en in vele Brugse woningen hangt.

Vorig jaar zette de enthousiaste historicus Koen Goeminne zijn schouders onder een prachtige heruitgave van deze kaart. Met een graficus en veel studiewerk maakten ze een volledig nieuwe scan van de kaart, deden de verschillende delen aan elkaar passen, zorgden voor een resem correcties en zochten een drukker die er iets moois van kon maken.

Zo krijgt het plan van Marcus Gerards een prachtige en welkome update voor de 21e eeuw.

In de brug laten we Koen Goeminne van het Historisch Onderzoeksbureau Vigor Clius aan het woord over hoe dit project tot stand is gekomen.

Beroepsjournalist en Brugge-kenner Chris Weymeis geeft context rond de geschiedenis en het belang van de kaart.

We stellen tevens het nieuwe boek voor van het trio Chris Weymeis, Nico Blontrock en Rudy De Nolf. Zij werkten samen aan “Brugge ongezien”, waarin ze een vijftigtal Brugse deuren ontsluiten, die voor het gewone publiek gesloten blijven. Plekken waar de Bruggeling aan voorbijloopt, zonder goed en wel te beseffen welke verhalen er achter deze muren zich afspeelden.

Winter Glow 2023: A Festive Extravaganza in Bruges

From November 24, 2023, to January 7, 2024, Winter Glow is back! Traditionally, the year-end period in Bruges hosts a plethora of activities, drawing crowds from far and wide. To ensure smooth proceedings, additional measures, especially concerning traffic, have been implemented this year. Public Transport Encouraged

Visitors are encouraged to use public transportation to reach Bruges. For those opting for cars, it’s recommended to utilize the (extra) perimeter or central parking lots, with regular public transport services to the city center.

Free Public Transport on Special Days

During the 24 shopping days, the Warmest Week (from December 18 to 24), and New Year’s Eve, public transport in Bruges is free!

Traffic Restrictions and Zones

Certain streets remain car-light or car-free throughout the year, including the year-end period. Guests staying in these areas should adhere to the established regulations, available on the ‘Car-light or car-free’ webpage. Note that the streets in the green zone (see the plan on the website) will be car-light every day from December 18 to 31.

Warmest Week Additional Measures

In connection with the Warmest Week, additional measures will be in place:

Temporary Taxi and Transportation Arrangements

Taxis will have a temporary stand in the early part of the Wollestraat. Coaches and sightseeing buses will depart from the Markt, near the Historium.

Nieuw boek : Brugge .. Stad van water

Brugge wordt vaak omschreven als het Venetie van het Noorden.

In zijn glorieperiode 1400-155 was Brugge een havenstad door zijn verbinding met de zee via het Zwin.

Een nieuw boek van de stadsgids Jo Berten, die al vele jaren toeristen door zijn geliefde stad rondleidt is recent verschenen via uitgeverij Borgerhoff. Berten is een vat vol anekdotiek en kennis.

Alles van zijn geliefde stad Brugge draait om “water” en dit in al zijn vormen en aspecten.

De haven is er niet meer maar wel nog  de reien, ooit handelswegen, nu toeristische attractie.

Vroeger was er de  handel over het water die luxeprodukten, grondstoffen en textiel in de stad bracht.

Er is de architectuur van de stadsgebouwen weerspiegeld in het water en de literatuur die uit het water put om over de stad te vertellen. 

Dat alles samen maakt van Brugge een idyllische stad van water.
